A Rose By Any Other Name Would Be Just As Cliché.

I was going to do this post a while back, but I did this one instead.

But that's not the point.

I have an unnatural fascination with names. I just love them.

Example:
At fourteen (maybe fifteen), I borrowed a baby name book from a Young Womens leader to use for stories. I'm not sure I ever gave it back...

Example:
I name my stuff. My parent's keyboard is Simon, my guitar is Francesca, my old phone was Herman, my old iPod was Ty, my new iPod is Julio, my computer is Sven, my calculator's name is Betty Lee, and my new phone doesn't have a name yet.

I also have a hard time associating names with more than one person.

Example:
At the beginning of junior year, Jordan (who is married to my favorite Canadian) became our new Sunday School teacher. He said that "Brother Bradley" made him feel old and to please call him "Jordan." But Andrea was dating a Jordan. Another friend was dating a Jordan, too. We just couldn't take another Jordan in our lives. We compromised: Brother Joe.

I love the meanings behind names and when they really fit.

Example:
My friend Shayna. Shayna is Yiddish for pretty

Example:
My grandma Amelia (my middle-namesake) Amelia is old German for industrious.

Example:
My dad. Christopher comes from the Greek for "bearing Christ inside."

But urbandictionary has way better definitions than the name books.
Example:
Name book will tell you Brooke= "small stream"
Urbandictionary will tell you Brooke= "Excitingly appealing; glamorous."

  1. And Megan means 'pearl' in Welsh. Funnily enough, I'm almost as white as paper and my boyfriend likes to tell me that my skin is really smooth. Coincidence? lol
